Day 4 Taiwan reflection (weichen)

I'm the IC!!!!!!!!!!! I was scared I didn't know what to do!!!!!!!!. I am not looking forward to the debrief.

Today was tired as the stress of ensuring all of the class added on to my usual exhaustion. Our schedule today was to go to the national museum of Taiwan, formason aboriginal village, which is a theme park. Then we moved on to the Fengjia night market.

The museum was a little too abstract to me. Even though the guide was explaining to us the drawings were drawn like that, I could not piece it together. Some of the drawings portray how easily we forget our family, the people treated badly, how difficult it was to build a family in a foreign place but got chased out and also the feelings of the painter herself. Some of them looked scary while some looked pretty. The museum was an interesting place.
This thing gives out a very weird noise.

At the theme park, we had only a few hours to spend but it is enough for us to ride most of the rides. The theme park was huge and we took the cable cars so many times, I think we were the noisiest cable car among the other cable cars. We then watched the show put up by the Ami tribe and they sold delicious ice-cream and pineapple. They gave out gifts when we answered their questions correctly. After the show the people that refused to sit the free fall went to wander around and check the rides. I went with Charmaine and sat on the Caribbean Splash ride. It was exhilarating as it combines roller coaster and kind of free fall as it was also really tall but definitely not as tall as the real free fall. But the surprising thing was we didn't really get wet even though the splash was huge! That was the best but my legs turned jelly, I dislike high speed stuff like roller coasters and this, so I refused to sit on the roller coaster ride. We then went to find the others and found them all queuing for a particular ride, we joined them. Pirates ship was next and I screamed my head off trying to get rid of the fear inside me. Oh how I hate this ride! But the adrenaline was rushing into my head and even thought I felt like vomiting, I went on the second time.:) after those rides I really feel like vomiting so I rejected the offer to dance the aboriginal dance. I will not be going to any theme park any sooner.
The gift which consist of different colors

I believed by the time I reached there, I was really tired and in no mood to go and shop. I slept most of the bus ride but still feel queasy from the last boat ride in the theme park. I guess I have a weak stomach... Anyway, because I was uncomfortable, both Meng hong and I don't eat the food sold by the stalls so the only option we had was Macdonalds. We went to buy our fathers' presents and also some accessories. We regretted not bringing our umbrellas with us as it started it rain suddenly without warning!

I was glad today had no debrief because if not I would have fallen asleep.

Day 4 Reflection (MH)

Today was really fun and interesting. It was overwhelming as well. I almost vomited and fainted after the free-fore ride. It was like commiting suicide when jumping down from a tall building. I really cried hard after that and could not stop after ten minutes. It was the first time I cried so much after two years. It was also the first time I cried in front of my class mates. I am really lucky to have class mates like Jing Yan and Dan Qi. They lend me a comforting shoulder and let me cry on their shoulders. After a while, I thought through it thoroughly and thought that it wasn't so scary after all. I really want to try that again. In the cable car was also really very fun as we were singing all the way and the teachers were also letting us choose which of us we can sit together. I even recorded a video of Brian and the others singing.
After that, I tried pirate ship 5-6 times, the roundly thingy 1 time, the jarassic period 1 time and the Gold Mine 2 times. I thought that t was really unfortunate that I couldn't ride the roller coaster. I was really looking forward to that but unfortunately, it was closed. The pirate ship was really scary but I remained neutral and WeiChen was screaming beside me. Xing Jian went for round after round and he laughed so loud that I can hear it from the other end of the ship.
After going to the theme park, we went to the night market which we all were looking forward to. Wei Chen was really neutral and was really tired and did not really smile, although she did smile for a little while. It was really fun buying things with WeiChen.  We even bought together a T-shirt for our fathers' souvenir. Weichen and I ate macdonalds since we couldn't find anything else to eat. She really looks as if she's tired and bored.
We were really tired after the whole day's activity and hurried to the hotel after that. I am sure I will gain so mug weight by the end of the trip. I hope that we can go and sit the cable car and the pirate ship again.

Day 3 Taiwan reflection

We went on a tour of the bilingual school the first thing we did when we reached the school.  did not really enjoyed yesterday. We went to the bilingual school instead and my new buddy was a loud person. In addition, because he's a guy, I couldn't give him any gifts and he didn't even come to watch me and say goodbye. He doesn't really talk to me in class and whenever I try to, he reply very loudly so loud until I was sacred.I feel that the students of experimental school is more friendly and carefree then the students of the bilingual school. My first buddy in the experimental school was more friendly and she was more caring and helpful. For our performance, I felt grateful and guilty to our buddies because we know that the flow of the performances was bad and some of them were even going away. My buddy came to watch our performance but came back later to continue watching. I was really grateful because it was nerve-wrecking to be standing on front of a bunch of strangers but I felt better when I saw my buddies.
The glass museum was fabulous! The art pieces made by the teachers were beautifully created. I bought a necklace worth NT$1000 of my mom. Then I bought something for myself too. It is very painful to leave our buddies behind as today we are going Taichung. I do hope that we would be able to contact each other in the future. She even promised me that she would come to Singapore to find me if she had the chance to!!!:)^_^

Day 3 Reflection

Today, I got a new buddy and it's a boy. I was really scared that he was rowdy at first. However, after talking to him, I found out that not all boys are that rowdy. He was really nice and guided me I'm a game in English lesson. The group mates in the team were also really humorous and funny. I didn't have to be left out after all. Today's performance was also a failure in my eyes. This is because we didn't even practises a lot together, we only managed to sing on the bus for a short while. Also the dancer's movements are totally not synchronized. Thats why I feel that we should have practises more in a group together so the people in the school could enjoy our performance more. It was too bad that the bilingual department did not come to see us perform as they were making preparations for the lunch with us which did not work out in the end as we were not informed and did not go. I think that they were really nice as in when I was departing from the school, my buddy came down and said goodbye to me, I was really happy for having such a caring partner even though we were together for only two hours. I also gave him a Singapore coin as I didn't prepare the card in time for him during lunch. Too bad we didn't take a photo together.
My other buddy was from yesterday's one and I gave her a book along with weichen. Weichen gave her buddy that same type of book as not hour buddies were best friends and they might prefer the same thing. The buddies also gave as a certificate of friends in return for being their friends. We even exchanged whatsapp accounts and phone numbers. It was really sad waving goodbye to all our new friends.
At the glass museum, I bought a necklace and some other things for my mom and dad. It was a pity as I didn't get to buy all the things I wanted in the store due to lack of money and time. The dimmer was really spicy and I didn't get to eat finish my food due to the fact I was too full.
In conclusion. I feel that today was really an enjoyable day and I hope that we will get to see our buddies again in the future.

Day 2(MH)

Today was really tiring. We had to go to school for pe and run in the sun for 800m in our jeans. After that, we were also forced to play basketball in our jeans. I felt really hot and sweaty. At first, I was really looking towards the buddy pair up. However, during the break, no one came towards us and welcomed us. I felt embarrassed in a foreign environment. However, during Chinese lesson, the teacher grouped us into groups of five. I and Weichen was grouped with three girls and we started to get along really well. That was when I found a buddy who was best friend with Weichen's buddy. I felt relieved that they were best friend as if they were not, I and Weichen would go separate ways and never see each other till the end of the day. The buddy was really nice as well, we really got along well. However, it was too bad that we have to get separated at the end of the day because we had to visit the science museum. I was really looking forward to the next day but a news shocked me, that we weren't going to see our buddies again as we are going to different departments.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed today when I was with my buddy. In the science museum, I was really very tired to listen to any of the things mentioned so I shut off my ear. Too bad for me. I really hope that I and my buddy would be friends forever.

Day 2 Taiwan reflection

Yesterday we went to the national experimental high school. Then we went to the industrial park full of new electronics made by Taiwanese.

At the NEHS, we waited in the room first and waited for the students of the class to come and fetch us. While we were waiting, the secretary of the principal showed us a presentation clip made by the students. However, some of us saw that it was made in 2004 instead of 2014! This means that there were many batches of students before and they used the same clip over and over again. Finally after our students' introduction, the Taiwanese students arrived and we followed them to their classroom. However, I was shocked to find out how their classroom works! 28 students in that one big classroom, they were all very noisy, noisier then our class which is impossible... Anyway, when we went in all eyes were on us and I suddenly felt shy and embarrassed. The class immediately helped us to move the tables and chairs to allow us to sit in a suitable position. I felt that that was really gratifying and helpful. I do hope that we are able to do that too if other foreign students come to our class.
First lesson was chemistry, that caused me to feel like fainting. I know carbon, hydrogen and oxygen were what they were talking about but the other stuff I have completely no idea, I heard they are going to have a practical lesson which is optionally seems like the chemical is too smelly and some people cannot stand it so they can choose whether to take it or not.
But the most important part is that I found myself a buddy!!!!!!!^^ her name is 千又 which is easy to remember. I met friends too, 盈淇, meng hong's buddy. Also mingqi who's name I don't know how to write. We really had a great day together. I disliked the lesson of afternoon nap I think that is because we came to the school halfway and we should not be tired but the students must be tired.

After we left the school, we went to the industrial park. It was very near the school and we took less then 20 min to get there. Thecentral management in the industrial park shows us the electronics they made. I wasn't that interested because I was tired from the previous pe lesson in school. Inside we saw toys, artificial bones and many electronics parts for computers and iPad. All in all, today was tiring too but the dinner was delicious! Better then the first day. I was so tired because the boys woke us up early in the morning.^^

Day1 Taiwan reflection

I would describe yesterday as tiring. Because it was the first day, I feel that instead of excitement I was tired. Even before the trip I was not that excited because I went to Taiwan before. Then during the flight it was uncomfortable as I do not do well with planes. I had no appetite for lunch and during the descend of the plane, I had a very bad headache that lasted for the whole of he descend, I had experienced it before but it still left me exhausted from the pain. So I was really tired, when I heard we had to get on the bus I felt like fainting. So yesterday, I ate a lot of sweets.

The tour guide, 曾志俊先生,is almost fifty years old. I do think our behavior on the bus was horrible and need to change our ways, so that we can respect our tour guide. We should quiet down and stop talking when he is speaking to us about the Taiwanese culture and history. Yesterday we learnt about respect for other people and also appreciation for the food we eat. As yesterday my stomach wasn't feeling very well, I did not eat much of the dinner. But I did drink a lot of hot soup which was delicious and warmed up my stomach. I am looking forward to today but we'd to put on our best behavior if not we will ruin our school reputation. I hope that today both boys and girls could stop laughing and talking so loudly.

Reflection on Day 1

Today, I boarded the plane and found my seat. During the flight, the boys were really noisy and restless during the trip. I was really annoyed especially when HongYang did not help in controlling their volume. Some of them also changed places and they played games, disturbing one laden who was sitting diagonally behind me. I hope the day when we come back, they would have become more mature and keep their volume down during the flight.

After alighting, we proceeded to the high speed train where we only got to sit for ten minutes. I was sleeping on the way there and I don't find it fun at all. Although they want us to feel how the high speed train feels like, I don't really like it, I only spoke to weichen who was beside me and kept quiet for the rest of the ride. During dinner, only is we're sitting with the boys, the boys were really roundy but I only laughed at their jokes. Although I was laughing, I hope that they would really keep down their volume and not disturb other people who were also having dinner there.

In conclusion, we didn't go to any place for visit today as the teachers miscalculated the timing. We only got back at about 7. Thus, we had no time to visit any place. The thing I learnt today was to respect others when they are talking and not chatter like it's our own house.

REFLECTION (YungLung)
During the holidays , my parents brought me to resort world sentosa marine life park . There were a lot of people there and we had to squeeze our way through just to see the attraction. During the course, i learnt many facts about the different marine animals and well as seeing them swimming gracefully in the waters. I really enjoyed this experience and would like to go there again. The most intriguing marine animal that i have seen is the jellyfish as they are just made up of protein and water but yet they could swim so gracefully in the waters as well as to protect themselves of they are out in the wild therefore i would like to learn more about it.

Poverty reflection( Yung Lung)

Poverty in Singapore may not be necessarily people who lines the street begging for money to sustain a living neither be hungry people who goes on the street scrounging food. In Singapore, people struggles with relative poverty can be defined as income falling below the substantial amount to maintain a living in Singapore because of the high cost of essential needs such as food etc. Poverty in Singapore Grew from 16% in 2002 to 28% in 2013

As a result, if people have health problems and needed expensive treatment or those with cash flow problems in their family will have to struggle to survive on a day to day basis. Apart from this, they are also trapped in a bad cycle which caused them to have no money or little to provide themselves a better life. Children are often having bad education due to them lacking of accessibility to knowledge and education, most of the time having to quit school to earn more money.

However government have been trying hard to tackle these problems by providing different types of financial aids and schemes for the poor and underprivileged. Each help scheme will have its own set of eligibility and their own specific purpose to help the people who needs it, such as housing and healthcare, or developmental areas such as early childhood development and education, our subsidies cover a wider group of Singaporeans. With higher levels of subsidies for the lower income, heavy burdens for low income family may be eased.  On top of these, programs such as Workfare and ComCare provide additional assistance to a smaller group of low income Singaporeans who need extra support.

Programs like money-management workshops can be organized which can  allow children to understand the concept of money and how to use it wisely so as not to waste money when they grow up and start earn their own income. Upgrading of one's work skills and knowledge will also allow adults to have a better chance to gain a more competitive edge in the job market, while better coping with economic challenges.

YAY:) after the introduction, now its time for our own views!

Although most of us, including me, does not really live in poverty, which can be a good thing for us. Most of us does not pay much attention to the people who lives in poverty and needed our help and thus we did not spare a thought for them just because we are not living in the same condition as them.....

well... not much of a good sight ain't it?

Sky high price of housing, atrocious food prices, high job competition, low wages.... sounds familiar?

These may be the many common cause of poverty in Singapore. for low education people who are in the blue collar industry , their wages could have been too low to sustain a living in Singapore due to the high cost of living.

As for the old , they may have been abandoned by their children or they could be childless. due to their old age they are too frail to work so their income may not be enough to sustain a living in singapore.

There may be a lot of people who needed our help out there, however, we may not have the ability to help them all as we our ownself also have to survive. Therefore, there are some nice , low cost methods to lend a helping hand to assist these unfortunate people.
1.We can help to donate food and daily necessities to charity organization to be distributed to those who needed them.
2.instead of wasting our unwanted but still in good condition clothing by throwing them away, we can also donate these to people who needed them so that they too can enjoy some luxury that we have.
3. even a simple task like actively participating public events(similiar to CIP/VIA) that may be held by charitable organizations to raise funds and do our part in helping them.
4. instead of throwing away our old textbooks, we can also donate or give them to other students whose parents may some difficulties buying their new textbooks.

Apart from these, we are also helping them in our ability as a student such as participating in VIA/CIP that may have been organised such as collecting newspaper from the different HDB blocks. Most students may not have understood the purpose of such activites and may be just doing for the sake of the VIA Hours. We MUST understand the value learnt behind these VIAs and not be materialistic and just eye for the hours.

Thanks to the government, we have such a clean and green environment as well as a safe place to live in as compared to those less developed countries. We must be thankful of what we have so we should always try to give back to society and not be selfish, keeping all our luxuries to ourselves. We must also spare a thought for those who have difficulty maintaining a living . Act Now, Don't Hesitate, Help others as much as we can :)

Consolidation of Learning 17/1/14 Yung Lung
After attending these few Cid lessons, i learnt much mainly on our observation skills for the first few weeks, such as observing the famous picture , vulture and child, taken by kevin carter. After observing this photo, it brings out several meaningful views that we should take note of. This picture tells us that there are other unfortunate fellow people out there who cannot enjoy even the basic necessecities such as food, one of such example is the boy in the picture that kevin carter had taken.

During the second lesson where we were told to observe two photos of people begging for money. This activity indeed allowed me to further understand the importance of not judging the book by its cover. We must always observe as carefully as possible and not miss out any important minute details. It is always important to view a single photo at different angles and analyse it carefully to determine what message it is conveying. In the tasks assigned that week, i also learnt the importance of researching as well which allowed me to go in depth and understand the poverty situation in singapore. In the course of researching, i understood that we are far more fortunate than people living in other countries especially those living in less developed countries. We should start cherishing whatever we have now and stop lamenting that we cannot get the best or the things we wanted as there are people with much less fortunate lives than us.

After these three week, a lot of ideas and their importance sank into me. These lessons made me understand that we should think broad and deep into the subject and not look at the immediate effects of the subject that we are looking into, this will cause us to make the wrong decision as we continue to look further into the subject. We must also observe carefully for the different clues, evidence etc. to make a deduction and conclusion on a particular subject. For example when we meet a certain problems in our daily lives, we can look at the different angles and survey the difficulties carefully and thus in this process deriving at a most effective solution to the targeted problem. We must not just look at the straightforward angle but think deeper and "hit the nail on its head"

Chingay Reflection (Yung Lung)
我们这里是新加坡,我阿爹系海山街住过... heard of this familiar song? Yes you're right its the uniquely Singapore song,麻雀衔竹枝, created by Liang Wern Fook. Hmmmm. thought of something else that is uniquely Singapore?

Yea I am now writing about another uniquely Singapore parade- Chingay Parade. And yes! the song is the one that we heard when we were heading to out seats at the Chingay parade. This is the second time I have to chance to catch this parade life! I am so nervous about this chance to watch the parade. it is very honoured to be given this unique chance.

Greeted by a sea of dancers, donning colourful dresses and costumes, I am so looking forward to what kind of performance that they will be putting up for us to see! After some entertainment by the emcees for that day, the parade slowly started and the whole area begin to come to life with students cheering happily, blasting music escaping the large sub woofers- all bringing us into the mood of the parade!

Different type of floats together with a whole group of accompanying dancers appeared one by one. I was mesmerised by their graceful dance moves and the coordination displayed in the dances which I myself normally hard to do so even with just 3 people. The performers had really put in a lot of effort judging from the spectacular performances they have put up for us. This parade allowed me to harvest lots of understanding of different important live values and dances of the different type of culture.

As no good things come without a history, i was also shocked to learn about  Chingay Parade's transformation!  It was actually part of chinese new year celebrations and was normally solely performed by the chinese but yet it has now transformed into "rojak" with the different types of culture present in just one parade!

This opportunity to head to a live performance of Chingay really allowed us to bond as a class and also allow to step out of our comfort zones. This opportunity is also and eye opener for me! This was exceptionally memorable experience with the parade ending with a spectacular fireworks display. Sadly it was put up on our side and cant really sit down and view it comfortably though... I really hoped that there will be more opportunities for us to participate in eye opening events. Don't you feel the same too? Join us if we have another chance.

Feeling about the presentations (YungLung)
Well... These two weeks my friends were all presenting on the Chingay parade that we participated last month! I am looking forward to their wonderful presentations but as the saying goes, nothing in this world is perfect and practice makes improvements.

There is room for improvement in their presentation as what Mr Chua had pointed out After all those preparation we made, its finally the chance to present it to our class, we are so nervous about it. However things did not go smoothly, things did not go as planned for some parts, for example, one group member stated that she wanted to do an extra point but however she decided not to in the actual presentation, how annoying it is for the person who did the slides an't it!
Furthermore, we actually forgot to say our reflections, what a waste, thrashing our efforts down the drains resulting in lesser points maybe?

Overall I personally feel that other groups presentations were relatively good especially Tiffany's group, with their deep reflections and feelings, allowing us to catch a feel of how much they have enjoyed or disliked the Chingay performance. Speaking of this, i also learnt new ways of expressing our own opinions which can be convincing for us audience!

This presentation also brought up a huge number of learning points for presentations and content wise. for me, I personally received a comment that I was too monotonous. Luckily, I was quite familiar with my script thus i was able to maintain eye contact with my classmates. rather than just learning from my weakness, we also learnt about the different weakness that were brought out by other group's presentations, for example, standing posture, voice projection and other types of presentation skills that is necessary for us to learn.

These series of presentation also allowed my to mature my confidence in myself too! I prepared a script and even decided to read off the script, however i will compromise eye contact thus i actually made up a "new" script on the spot and spoke pretty smoothly( though a bit monotonous...). As such i found a new form of confidence in me and subsequently i did the same with other presentations!

I was glad to go through this series of presentations because I benefited greatly form it especially building up my confidence and presentation skills. I personally hope that there will be more of such chances for us to polish our presentation skills and learn from our mistakes improving our skills everytime we have a new chance

The Forbidden Palace.

From this structure i can infer that the rulers are wasteful.Resources pooled in to build the palace could have been used to support and help poor farmers and peasant who can barely survive and yet the imperial rulers used these resources for their own interest which more than half of those buildings redundant or extra large. Even a family of 6-7 can live in such a small HDB flat but yet the imperial rulers built a single palace for each concubine... What are they thinking? Its clearly a waste of resource.

It also shows that the rulers were irresponsible.Being the ruler of the country, the emperor should be thinking of the welfare of people and yet he went to have someone to build such a big palace and yet poor people can barely afford a house themselves. It clearly shows that imperial rulers are not doing their job.

They were also being selfish by building the palace for themselves and used funds from taxing the people. They used so much funds to build the palace that they could not upgrade their army and protect the people. It also a waste of manual labour of the builder. In the past, there are no machines the aid in building the palace. It all rely on manual labour and it is dangerous to construct high buildings. By building extra or redundant buildings, labour of the people are being wasted.

The Forbidden City displayed the bad attitude of the imperial rulers of being inconsiderate rulers and selfish, self centered people.

China one child policy(Yung Lung)
What is child policy? It is the official the family planning policy, the population control policy of the People's Republic of China. Yes this may seems to be a solution to China underlying problem but upon giving it a deeper thought i felt very sad and infuriated

No child in the world should be living in loneliness after they are born. With the one child policy, children cannot have siblings and would feel very lonely without a playmate. I feel terribly sad that children have to go through this due to the policy. Apart from these it also encourages infanticide. Who on earth does not deserve a chance of living? This policy indirectly causes parents to destroy their child's chance to see the beautiful world especially when the fetus is a female one. Furthermore, it also cause a larger work force strain.

This policy is very unfair to the common people and will cause them to be unhappy because they have to give up their second child destroying their first child's playmate causing them to be lonely. furthermore, this policy did not seem to achieve its goal since the population of china is still growing which now is the second largest in term of population. With reference the lone child as mentioned earlier,I feel that it is at a disadvantage for them because they will not have a companion to accompany them through their growing years furthermore this will more likely to cause this lone child to make friends with bad company because they may be desperate for a friend to accompany them. for those parents out there in china who were affected by the one child policy, how sad to deprive your child from companions and destroy a wonderful childhood every children should have, its very heart breaking ain't it?

There is even a more heartbreaking point prior to not having a second child- killing female fetus as people want male to carry on the family line. This is much more heartbreaking, don't you think so? Rather than fulfilling its main purpose, it brought about more harms to the citizens and children.

I hope other types of population control measures will be implemented instead of ways with disadvantages for the children and is ineffective in achieving its intended purpose

China-economy ( Yung Lung)
China now ranks second in terms of total GDP. With 3,854,082 square miles, there will be a lot of spaces for office buildings, residential and commercial building and there are a lot of space for other economic activities to be conducted. Furthermore, the rental, labour and tax rate are in low rates there thus attracting more companies to set up factories there to manufacture their products. Apart from this, china has a population of 1.3 billion which will result in more economic activities because salaries will be lower, attracting firms. With this larger number of favtories, carbon emissions will be higher , thus air quality would be lower and pollution problems will worsen drastically.

I feel that china should put in more effort in limiting carbon emissions. They could have set more strict emissions standards, conduct more frequent checks on factories to see whether there is any firm that violates the law using inefficient way of production. Carbon emission is so harmful! Causing global warming which has countless of adverse effect on us and environment!

If global warming worsens, even by a 1 degree, huge adverse environmental will surface as a result. The people of Carteret Islands have already became environmental refugees due to global warming effects! China should really put in more effort to curb emission rates.

China should start to limit carbon emission to make the world a better place to live in, Think of this, with the increasing amount of carbon dioxide and air pollution, people will develop eye irritation and respiratory problems. How can these people even enjoy the growing economics with deteriorating health? At such economic growth can be slowed down in order to protect citizens' health rather than a rising economy which people cannot enjoy peacefully.

True that health is an important aspect that we should never ever overlook, i do not blame china seriously. Since she is a developing country, she should not compromise economic growth by using higher cost clean and green production methods which reduces emission of air pollutants into the atmosphere

Although the government is largely responsible for the increasing air pollution, i think that factories owners play an even important part because most of them may have the ability to make use of greener energy source but yet they chose to use the cheaper but least environmental friendly coal.

We should always think win-win. We should not compromise people's health just to obtain a higher economic growth. Everything must be balanced even though i admit that economic growth cannot be compromised. This can be achieved like what u haved stated earlier, setting more strict regulations to mitigate pollution issues and even make an effort to reduce emissions of air pollutants and carbon dioxide!

One child policy (Danqi)

One child policy is the population control policy of the People's Republic of China. It was introduced in 1979 to alleviate social, economic, and environmental problems in China and it is enforced at the provincial level through fines that are imposed based on the income of the family and other factors. It has been The policy has been implicated in an increase in forced abortion, female infanticide, and underreporting of female births, and has been suggested as a possible cause behind China's sex imbalance. I think that it is not fair to kill babies, but i understand that the government were firced to come to that decision beacuse of the overwhelming population. But the government has been quite lenient on the people, allowing the parents to have more children if either parent is an only child, or if their first child is disabled. I think thta the one child policy is not helping at all as there is still a huge increase in the population of the Chinese.
population.

China's Economic(MH)

Since the initiative of economic reform in 1978, China has enjoyed high economic growth for three decades. This growth has however been driven mainly by export- oriented, labour-intensive manufacturing activities. In 2008 the total value of China’s export accounted for 32% of the country’s GDP. In the mean time, tens of millions of workers were employed in the export sector. As a result the Chinese economy is very vulnerable to external shocks such as the 2008 US sub-prime credit crisis and the resultant recession and decline in demand for Chinese exports. To sustain economic growth in the future, China’s policy makers are keen to boost the role of innovation in the country’s economic development so that the economy will eventually be transformed into a knowledge-intensive one which is less dependent upon external markets (Schaaper 2009, Zhang et al. 2009). This goal is clearly envisaged in the country’s “Medium-to-Long Term Plan of National Science and Technology Development (2006-2020)” announced in February 2006.

Pollution is one aspect of the broader topic of environmental issues in China. Various forms of pollution have increased as China has industrialized, which has caused widespread environmental and health problems.

Before they even look out the window in the morning, many Beijingers have checked a smartphone app to see the pollution index for the day. Any reading below 100 offers a dose of reassurance – even though it is still well above ideal levels – but above that and pollution is the main topic of the day.
The index has been close to the top of the charts(PSI). Smog over BeiJing makes the sun a thin orange disk and adds a mysterious aura to the city as pedestrians and buildings fade into the gloom. On the worst days, people keep children indoors and scuttle about in masks with only their eyes showing.

One Child Policy(MH)

There are both benefits and disadvantages of having a one child policy in China.
This is one of the benefits of one child policy. It is reported that the focus of China on population control helps provide a better health service for women and a reduction in the risks of death and injury associated with pregnancy. At family planning offices, women receive free contraception and pre-natal classes that contributed to the policy's success in two respects. First, the average Chinese household expends fewer resources, both in terms of time and money, on children, which gives many Chinese more money with which to invest. Second, since young Chinese can no longer rely on children to care for them in their old age, there is an impetus to save money for the future.(Impact on health care)

This is one of the disadvantages of one child policy. The percentage of children in china who are extremely spoiled is immense. Because of the one child per family policy children are very rarely disciplined (spankings etc..) and have immense pressure put on them by their familes. This causes an increase in drug use/addiction and alcoholism as well as increases in suicides.
Another one is...
Many women get ultrasounds and if they are going to have a daughter, they abort the fetus. Or if a woman is too poor for ultrasounds and give birth to a girl, it is not unheard of for them to abandon the child (or let it die). It is the belief that a male child will earn more money over their life time, and therfore a male child will take better care of their parents.
(most chinese parents retire at about the age of 45, and their child is supposed to take care of them. The male child earns more money, and is better capable of taking care of his parents, then the man and woman take care of the womans parents.)
This has lead to a major imbalance in the demographics of china where there are currently 120 men to every 100 women. that doesn't sound like a big problem but in a country of 1.6 billion, that means there are approximately 16 Million men who will never be able to get married, have children or carry on their family names inside of china.
Overall, I think that there are more disadvantages than benefits of one child policy because it does not only affect the child's future, but the entire country's future and progress as well. If more children get addicted to alcohol, then what will become of the future of China?!?

Reflection On Chingay Parade (MH)

At the start of the Chingay parade,I sat down and found that they also prepared a goodie bag for us like they did during the National Day Parade every year. I found all sorts of goodies and food inside. However, I really hate the calcium bar.
During the parade, I and my friends took a lot pictures at the performers who were in a 'hyper' mode. The two performances I enjoyed the most was the ballet and the dragon and lion dance by the people. The floating lanterns put up near the end of the parade was also really enjoyable. I enjoyed the ballet dance because I could see the dancers performing swan lake and the dress they were wearing was also really nice with the frilly thing that goes around the hem of the dress. All the dancers were all really in sync and they were performing at a steady beat which makes me wonder how did they manage to train themselves into performing in sync. The dragon and lion dance was also really enjoyable especially when the dragon started to go in circles and began to chase after their food supposingly. The dragon also looks very flexible as it started to turn and twist in all sorts of directions. I was watching practically with my jaw down as the dragon began to 'leap' about and doing all kinds of tricks. I was cheering all the way till my voice was getting hoarse. I was really hyper that day.
The bad thing about the parade was that the school behind us kept throwing things down at us like rubbish such as sweet wrappers. Min hui also got hit on the head and it looks really painful. She was holding her head all the way till the end of the parade. I think the school behind us was really inconsiderate.
Overall, I really enjoyed the performance, but the school behind us really spoiled the mood. In this parade, I got to see all kinda of culture like Indian and Malay. I hope that next time I would get to go to Chingay parade again. This is an unforgettable life experience for me.

CID Presentation Reflection (MH)

During my group's presentation, I was really nervous. That was because I was scared that I would stumble over words that are difficult to read. When it was my turn, I didn't expect myself to have any feelings in my voice or make any eye contact. I simply read from my script and looked at the audience once in a while. But I think it was quite well done. I won't forget the feeling of nervousness during the presentation in my life. My groups' slides were really well done in my view point. Because not did we only decorate the background with different colours, we also put the video of the part of the parade relevant to the title of that particular slide.
When I was listening to other groups present, I was impressed by their relaxed speech and the fact that they don't look nervous at all. I realized that my speech was really nothing compared to theirs. I really hoped that I could at least get a B at that time. I also think that the slides the other groups presented was also well done, I really liked the design of their slide and the fonts they used to match their slides.
Overall, I think that the slides and other groups presentation was really well done including ours which I think that our slides are the best among the other groups.

Chingay reflection(xingjian)

Chingay parader is held because of the ban on firecrackers a year earlier in 1972 as a result of fire hazards. The people is very unhappy with the decision, so to address this issue and let the people to feel the atmosphere of chinese new year, Singapore held its first Chingay on 4 February, 1972. it is originally to celebrate chinese new year, however, it became a multi-cultural one from 1977 when Malay and Indian groups started joining in the performances, which was to mark a major precedent in the overall flavour of the parade into one which has become largely multi-cultural in character, despite the continued presence of traditional Chinese acts such as lion dances and stilt walkers to this day. This year, the school had given us a opportunity to watch the chingay parade. to be honest, not only this is my first time watching it, i don't even know what is chingay parade till the teacher tell us. i was really amused by the performance put up by the performers, their dance are so good that it makes me wonder how much hardwork did they put in. the batik cloth represent racial harmony and kampung spirit, because the task only can be done if the resident coorperate with one another. however, i personally think that the meaning of chingay parade has been changed and twisted and time goes by. It was held to celebrate chinese new year, as told to us by the organizing commitee of chigay parade, but i think that is in the past. As time pass by and the Malay and Indian groups started joining in the performances in 1977, in my opinion, the chingay parade now is to convey messages like racial harmony, kampung spirit and many more, celebration of chinese new year is no longer the main purpose of chingay parade. It is slowly fading off as more meanings are added into chingay parade, and who know, maybe one day the purpose of chingay parade will no longer have the celebration of chinese new year listed in it.

Consolidation of learning (weichen)

I feel that the first lesson taught me to be more observant as the pictures of poverty were shown. I did not think more deeply and immediately concluded that I would help the woman with the baby and not the man beggar. We learnt many many things in CID like GDP, poverty, chingay parade that was unforgettable and many more including China's history. We also learnt how to be able to present a presentation correctly and with vigor. As that was my first time presenting in CID about the chingay parade, I was nervous and did not know what to say even though we did prepare. As we presented on the second day, I saw the previous groups presenting and thought, " oh no, our slides are so little we're sure gonna get scolded..."
However, I know that I'm not the only one presenting and it is alright to make mistakes. I have to maintain eye-contact with the audience and be able to memories most of my script so that it enables me to seem confident even though my legs were wobbling underneath me. We were presenting as a group so I should not be so nervous as I'm not the only one standing in front of the class and speaking. I know that when I started talking, I had forgotten all that Mr Chua had said before hand. I believe that as a team, we are capable of overcoming all obstacles set in front of us.

Consolidation for CID(MH)

This is the consolidation for the lessons we went through till now.

After the first few lessons, I have learnt to infer from different pictures. Now, I know that different pictures has different meanings in them. Even if it is the same picture, the meaning of it changes depending on which angle you look at it. Also, after showing me the picture based on poverty, I also started to feel pity for the beggars on the street who does not have a job.
When I started to go into the history of China, I was really interested in them. It really does differ a lot from Singapore which only has a short history of 50 years. Especially when we started to discuss on China's one child policy. I was really amazed that before the one child policy was published, each family could produce 8 children! I was wondering how was that possible as some of the children are of the same age although they are not twins.
I went deeper into the history of the Great Wall of China and found out that it stretched more longer than I thought it would. It is also visible from outer space. I really look forward to OELP as it would further deepen my knowledge about the culture of both China and Taiwan.

China's History(MH)

The history of the Great Wall Of China traditionally began when fortifications built by various states during the Spring and Autumn(771–476 bc) and Warring state periods  (475–221 bc) were connected by the first emperor of China, Qing Shi Huang, to protect his newly founded Qin Dynasty (221–206 bc) against incursions by nomads from inner Asia. The walls were built of rammed earth, constructed using forced labour, and by 212 BC ran from Gansu to the Manchurian coast.
Now, it has become a place for tourists. The Great Wall Of China is also one of the two man-made structures that can be seen from the outer space in the satellite. Many stories also has originated from the Great Wall Of China. The Emperor from the past who build the wall ordered for the villagers who were man to help with the building of the wall. They were forced to build the wall and many died because of exhaustion and thirst. Their bodies were buried under the bricks and they became a part of the huge man-made structure.

One child policy (weichen)

China implimented the one child policy to control the number of babies borned per year. This is because China has a too huge population which it is unable to control as there are too many people. This policy was implimented during 1979 but is not practiced now in urban areas except for rural areas. China has the largest population presently compared to other countries in the world. Even though China tried to imply the policy on its citizens, many citizens still give birth to more than one child. However, China do allow the second child to be born but it comes with a very high price. The family must pay a large sum of money to the government just because they gave birth to another child. This is impossible for many families in China as majority of citizens are poor. Thus this would lead them to either aborting the child or just killing it after the baby was born. This is very cruel as I could not bear to think how the mother especially will have suffered in knowing her child has passed away. Blood ties cannot be broken so easily. This is the main reason why I feel that China had gone overboard with the policy. No parents would bear to leave their child alone and vulnerable in the world they have just came to.
However, the government has considered this policy to benefit them in the long run. I feel that China really has to control their amount of people or else China's economy will not be able to keep up and thus causing more people to become jobless. I think that because China's economy is not at good, many citizens from China moved overseas-provided they have the money to do so- to earn more money for their family. The one child policy does have its benefits in the country but not to its citizens. The citizens might be poor and might not be able to afford another child but I feel that parents will die for their child even if they are poor. In conclusion, I feel that China should impliment the one child policy but must also compemsate the families as giving birth to a number of babies cannot be controlled so easily by the human body, instead of fining them.

one child policy(xingjian)

One child policy is the population control policy of china, like its name suggest, it only allows the parent to have one baby, however, families can have a second child if the first child is a girl or is disabled, and ethnic minorities are exempt. This policy was introduced in 1979, but in In November 2013, the Chinese government announced that it would further relax the policy by allowing families to have two children if one of the parents is an only child. It is indeed a good way to reduce the weight on the parents if they have more children. this will also make their life much more easier. However, i dont think that it is very affective to control China's population. When the policy is introduced in 1979, the population is 0.65billion, but China's population is still increasing even after the policy is introduce and reach 1.34billion in 2007. it is really ironical, since the purpose is to control the population but the result shows that the population had increased rapidly instead. Also, i believe that there are much more better method to cotrol the population of China than this. i think that this policy is not as perfect as it seem. it will benefit the parents and control the population in china, but as the parents age, the children will need to take care of two adult without any sibling to help out, and the grandchildren gonna take care of six people, both paternal and maternal, all by himself! i am the only child until i was 13, so i know exactly how the only child's feeling, the feel of loneliness when you don't have a playmate to play with after fininshing your homework, the feel of jealousy when you see other people who had their siblings to accompany him when you don't. thus, i don't like the one child policy because i believe that there are other ways to control it, with a better result.

Reflection on China's dilemma

China's population is growing fast and it's economy need to keep up. Thus, it's carbon emission is very high. As, China emit a high amount of greenhouse gases, it pollutes the air and contribute to global warming. Citizens in china breathe out a larger amount of carbon dioxide than other countries so they also contribute to the amount of carbon dioxide emissions of china. As China is still a developing country, I feel that they need to think of their citizens first, that's why they chose to increase their economy instead of decreasing the carbon emissions of the country. I feel that China should put her citizens in first place and economy second as the government should think about the citizens health first. I feel that in the future, if China continue to care only about its economy, then I feel that global warming will increase faster and the people of Chin will suffer because of natural disaster sand it will not only limit to the people of China but the entire world. As China is one of the largest carbon emitters, she should play her part and try to reduce the amount of carbon emissions, if not it will play the most part of global warming. Thus, I feel that China should reduce its carbon emissions and think about her people's health.
